Summer hits Newport
For most of the year Newport Beach is a relatively quiet Orange County beach town. But come summer, when the south swell starts pushing in, "Newps" turns into a literal surfing playground. Nobody knows this better than local icon Richie Collins.
Newport can be a great place to take in a fireworks show -- on the 4th of July and beyond -- especially if there's a good south swell running.
Between 54th and 56th Streets is pretty much the epicenter of the action. If you're going for a surf check, it's usually the first stop and serves as a good indicator of what's happening up and down the coast.
Companies like Hurley, Volcom, Quiksilver, and Billabong are all within a 20-minute drive of the Newport sands, making the area the epicenter of the surf industry. This attracts talent from all over, like Hawaii's Kalani David who has taken up residence here as of late.
Shaking hands and kissing babies is all part of living on the beach for Bob Hurley. One of the most powerful men in the surf business, he is also one of the first to share a smile or split a peak.
With her sponsor Volcom's HQ just up the road, women's World Tour battler Coco Ho spends her fair share of time in the water in Newport. She'd probably rather be at home at Hawaii's Rocky Point than in California in a wetsuit, but it's a living.
Balboa Ferris Wheel
The only way to roll in Newport when summer traffic's slammed. The Balboa Fun Zone is a great place to hang out when the surf goes flat or the wind comes onshore.
Right against the Newport Harbor jetty dwells the infamous Wedge. It roars to life on only the biggest south swells, and breaks in about three feet of water -- thus there aren't many takers for this wave.
If it's crowded blame this guy: he works at Surfline. The corporate offices for this surf forecasting company are about five miles north, up PCH.
The East Coast isn't the only place you can get a proper slice of pizza. If you've spent any time in Newport you know, the pie here is as good as it gets.
Cam Richards is another Newport transplant. Making his way west from South Carolina, he recently represented Team USA at the ISA World Junior Surfing Championships in Nicaragua.
Newport at Sunset
There is a reason they call it "Orange" County.
