Though much has been made of the lack of snow in Krasnaya Polyana, the mountains actually have world-class big-mountain terrain that has been ski and snowboard movies for years. The only problem is that the snow level during warm years starts right above the ski and snowboard halfpipe and slopestyle venues.
The new village at the base of the gondola that takes you up to the Olympic freestyle ski and snowboard venues at Rosa Khutor resort is brand new. Just a year ago there was only one hotel here. Half of the buildings you see here are still under construction.

In the beginning there was only one old double chair lift servicing a place called Alpika Service resort, where Artem Teymurov is jumping here. Right now that resort is closed, but they are building new lifts and Alpika will soon connect with Rosa Khutor by lifts and we will have two big resort in one ski-pass.
Rosa Khutor has a number of chutes and small couloirs that, when filled with snow, rival the terrain of any famous big mountain in the world.

Because of it's proximity to the sea, the mountains of Krasnaya Polyana have a maritime snowpack that is similar to Whistler -- which means it sticks to rocks and forms big, beautiful powder pillows like this. We took this photo at Rosa Khutor in the beginning of April.
