    Defining the 'Essence'

    By Kim Stravers

    Published Wednesday February 6, 2013

Style: definitely essential. Elena Hight tweaks it out at Dew Tour Breck.

Let's be honest: There's a lot more to women's snowboarding than a pair of X chromosomes. But what is it that makes the female half of the shredder army unique? Pro rider Elena Hight certainly helps define the concept of women in the sport -- in Aspen last month, the four-time X Games Women's Snowboard SuperPipe medal-earner rode away clean from the first double alley-oop backside rodeo ever landed in competition by a guy or a girl -- but she's more interested in finding out what the average ripper thinks.

During X Games Aspen, Hight launched the "Essence Of Women's Snowboarding" photo contest, the winner of which will be announced at X Games Tignes, Mar. 20-22, 2013. Open to everyone, the contest invites amateur snowboarders and photographers to shoot and submit action images that illustrate a female rider's experience on the hill. Entries are being accepted at the "Essence Of Women's Snowboarding" Facebook page.

"The 'Essence Of Women's Snowboarding' photo contest celebrates girls of all ages who are shredding up their favorite spots simply because they love it," says Hight. "This contest will share those photos around the world and one lucky winner will get a sick prize pack from all my sponsors. For me, this is another way to spread the love for women's snowboarding and the lifestyle around it -- and to showcase how amazing women can be."

A team of industry pros will select the best of the best, and the winning girl will receive not only a prize pack, but also an interview with Hight on XGames.com. Images from professional photographers and snowboarders will be disqualified; this contest is open to amateurs only.
