Icelandic snowboarder Halldor Helgason was discharged from the hospital Saturday morning after he had a precautionary MRI on his neck for the concussion he suffered Friday night during the finals of the America's Navy Snowboard Big Air competition at X Games Aspen.
Helgason hit his head hard on the landing when he crashed after he over-rotated on an attempted triple backflip. He waved to the crowd as he was taken off the course in a sled before he was taken to the hospital. A later CT scan was negative and Helgason was awake and alert, according to X Games Medical.
Helgason, 22, won gold in Big Air in 2010 and is the only athlete from Iceland to medal in an X Games winter event.
Torstein Horgmo of Norway outdueled Canadian Mark McMorris to win Big Air gold.
