German freeskier Bene Mayr got his start as a ski racer, then a mogul skier. At 15, he switched to freeskiing. Now 24, he's Germany's best bet for an Olympic medal in slopestyle at the sport's Olympic debut in Sochi, Russia, next February.
X Games in Munich
This week, Mayr will be a spectator at X Games Munich, happening right in his hometown. "As an athlete, you can relate to what's going on," he says. "And if the guy down there puts it down, you know exactly how he feels. Like nothing else matters."
Legs of Steel
In addition to competing, Bene Mayr is best known for his film segments with Poor Boyz Productions, Nimbus Independent and Legs of Steel. Here he is filming for Legs of Steel's 2013 release, "The LOSt."
LOS in BC
Mayr filming at British Columbia's Monashee Powder Snowcats last winter.
"He's one of the steeliest riders out there," says German freeskier and event founder Nico Zacek. "My favorite trick of Bene's is his double cork 10 safety poke that he's established in a world of mute grabs."
Into the Future
This summer, Mayr will be hitting the gym twice a day and doing trampoline work. "I want to do this for as long as my body lets me," says Mayr.
Getting the Shot
"Bene won't give up until he gets the shot, and if the vibe is down he thinks of something to make it better," says LOS director Andrew Nutini. "He has an eye for what works."
