    Dashing Away

    By Rian Rhoe

    Published Saturday February 9, 2013

Freeskier Dash Longe recently competed in the Red Bull Linecatcher contest in France (he placed 10th) and now, he's traveling and filming for the rest of the winter. Earlier this month, Longe was nominated for Best Male Performance at the Powder Video Awards for his part in Teton Gravity Research's 2012 film "The Dream Factory" (Candide Thovex ended up winning the award). We spoke to Longe from Les Arcs, France, on travel, style in skiing, and more.

    On downtime:
You experience a lot of downtime throughout the season and then it's go time. Once you're shoved into a line, your brain and body just take over. You just have to try and chill and have a good time.

    On travel:
I can't stay in one place. I like to experience new places and cultures. It's so much nicer to get out and see what's different in the world and learn from that. I like to meet new people and experience different cultures. It dawned on me the first year I was filming with TGR that I might be able to see the world through skiing. We went to Kashmir. I didn't even realize that you could ski there. And then it was like, "Oh, yeah, these are the Himalayas." That was a really special trip.

    On France:
The culture is older and a bit more laid-back. I like European countries for that reason. There is so much history. Where we come from is so young.

On his Male Performance of the Year Award nomination by Powder Magazine:
I was stoked at the end of last year and knew that I skied well. I've been doing this for so long that I was kind of used to not being nominated. I'm pretty hard on myself and I always think I can do better. I can't even express how crazy it is. It feels like a sense of accomplishment. It's a nice payoff to hear that people like what I do and are interested in my skiing.

    On style:
For me, natural ability can lead to style, but it's about making it look fluid and effortless and I think that's where you find style. It's when you see guys pull off technically difficult tricks with ease. When you see it, you know it. I think there is still a lot of sloppy skiing out there.
