A skateboard ridden, autographed and auctioned by Tony Hawk fetched $60,000 last week in Poland, part of a package deal that included a private lesson with the skate legend.
Hawk rode the board during a demo in Warsaw, a pitstop on this year's Gumball 3000, an annual 3000-mile road rally. Driving a customized Alpine Edition Twisted Defender, Hawk participated in this year's rally -- which stretched from Copenhagen, Denmark, to Monte Carlo, Monaco -- with BMX legend Mike Escamilla and pro skateboarder Aaron "Jaws" Homoki, who rides for Hawk's company, Birdhouse.
Riding the vert ramp from X Games Barcelona, skaters Renton Millar, Sam Beckett and Juergen Horwarth, and BMXer Zach Shaw joined Hawk, Escamilla and Homoki at the Warsaw demo, which drew an estimated 15,000 spectators to Pilsudski Square. The auction was held that night after the demo.
"Gumballers generally have substantial income, and I think we held the auction at the perfect time during the arrival party [in Poland]," Hawk told XGames.com via email a few days later from Verona, Italy. "Prince Talal M. A. Al-Faisal Al-Saud of the Saudi Arabian royal family bought [the skateboard and lesson] because he recently watched the Bones Brigade documentary and was inspired by it to start skating."
"I am officially getting skateboarding lessons from the one and only @tonyhawk," the prince posted on his Instagram feed after submitting the winning bid.
The prince's prize package is what's called the Tony Hawk Experience, according to Miki Vuckovich of the Tony Hawk Foundation, which helps build free, public skateparks in low-income neighborhoods.
"[The Experience] is really customized," Vuckovich said. "The guest will come by [headquarters] and if he's is a skater, he'll get a private lesson, some hang-out time with Tony. It's designed to fit the person."
Vuckovich added that the $60,000 benefits the Gumball Foundation. In turn, Gumball presented Hawk with a check for $100,000 for his foundation, which was one of the initial beneficiaries of Gumball's charity outreach.
