Nike SB will be the title sponsor of the Street League Skateboarding Nike SB World Tour, marking the end of a three-year relationship with DC Shoes, the founding title sponsor of the series and longtime sponsor of SLS creator Rob Dyrdek and his many projects, Street League Skateboarding announced Thursday.
"Our discussions with Nike SB came about as our deal with DC was expiring," said Brian Atlas, general manager of Street League Skateboarding. "After collaborative discussions evolved, it was clear that their vision for skateboarding competition was truly aligned with ours and ultimately proved to be the best opportunity for evolving Street League and elevating our tour."
That platform has expanded significantly this year; the Nike SB news comes one month after news of a Street League at X Games partnership to bring the Street League Skateboarding competition format to the 2013 X Games Men's Skateboard Street events in Foz Do Iguaçu, Brazil; Barcelona, Spain; Munich; and Los Angeles as well as U.S. stops in Kansas City, Mo. and Portland, Ore., all building up to the Super Crown World Championship in Newark, N.J., on Aug. 25. Each stop of the series will be televised on ESPN/ESPN2 and ESPN3.
"With the support of Nike SB and the immense power of the ESPN X Games platform, more fans will be able to watch their favorite pros compete in the most exciting stage for street skateboarding than ever before," Atlas said. "By becoming the official organizer of street skateboarding at Global X Games events, we've been able to scale our tour from four to seven events with international expansion to Brazil, Spain and Germany."
Atlas said each event will include the standard design of Street League courses, sharing the format, judges, price purse, athletes and point system to qualify into the Super Crown Championship.
Nike SB has been in the skateboarding game for just over a decade and has been sponsoring several high-profile skateboarding events including Tampa Pro, Tampa Am and several events in the international Damn Am series.
"Nike SB is committed to inspiring and supporting skateboarders around the world," said Melanie Strong, senior director of global brand for Nike SB, in a statement Thursday. "This is a true partnership and testament to Street League Skateboarding in that we are celebrating skateboarding on the grand stage and making this journey accessible to all fans and skaters."
Pros competing this year include defending X Games gold medalist Paul Rodriguez and his Nike SB teammates Ishod Wair, Sean Malto and Shane O'Neill, reigning Street League champ and 2011 X Games gold medalist Nyjah Huston and three-time X Games gold medalist Ryan Sheckler. Additional participants are Austyn Gillette, Bastien Salabanzi, Mikey Taylor, Matt Miller, Luan Oliveira, Billy Marks, Chaz Ortiz, Chris Cole, David Gonzalez, Dylan Rieder, Peter Ramondetta, Tom Asta, Tommy Sandoval and Torey Pudwill.
