Torn ACL can't stop Stewart's season

    By Jim Wilkie

    Published Thursday January 17, 2013

Two-time Supercross champion James Stewart revealed Thursday that he has a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, but he will continue racing this season.

"We're here to race; I'm not using it as an excuse. I don't want to talk about it anymore," Stewart told Racer X online. "I feel like it is not going to hinder my performance in the championship. The first two races, the first race I was hurt, last weekend it was just some unfortunate situations. But from here on out we're just here to race."

Stewart injured his knee in practice Jan. 6 before Anaheim 1, the Supercross season opener Jan. 5 at Angel Stadium. Supercross Round 3 will take place Saturday again at Anaheim, Calif. Klingensmith said Stewart "actually looked really, really good on the test track" Tuesday and Wednesday and that his knee was feeling fine.

"He has to be careful with it," said Jake Klingensmith of Stewart's Yoshimura Suzuki Racing Team. "He's been putting it out, and he's been using it. … His knee will gain strength as long as he doesn't tweak it."

If he can avoid another setback, options for surgery will be analyzed after the Supercross season, Klingensmith said.

"I didn't fall over, I just caught my knee wrong," Stewart told the Los Angeles Times about the injury after Anaheim 1, where he raced cautiously in the main event and finished eighth.

"We were just amazed he could get on a bike, but he's a tough dude," Klingensmith said.

After following that up with a seventh last week in Phoenix, Stewart's 27 points have him tied for seventh overall with two-time defending champion Ryan Villopoto and Andrew Short.

Stewart is chasing his ninth career 450SX victory in Anaheim, which would break the tie he holds with Jeremy McGrath for the most career Supercross wins there.
