    Sara Price's new stage

    By Keith Hamm

"What I've learned is to just be yourself," Sara Price says of competing in beauty pageants.

Women's motocross champ and X Games medalist Sara Price is looking to swap out her racing helmet for a diamond tiara this weekend at the Miss California USA 2013 beauty pageant in Pasadena, Calif.

The 20-year-old motocross prodigy -- who won 17 national amateur titles with three different sanctioning bodies and won AMA/WMX "Rookie of the Year" honors in 2009 -- has submitted her photo portfolio to the judges and is now preparing for the pageant's three equally scored onstage events: interview, swimsuit and evening gown.

"What I've learned is to just be yourself," Price told XGames.com. "When you do that, it'll show, and that's what the judges want to see."

The Miss California USA pageant is owned by business magnate and "The Apprentice" TV star Donald Trump. According to its website, the pageant is "looking for outgoing, intelligent, confident, attractive young women excited to represent the beauty of California."

Price's entry into Miss California USA comes on heels of winning first runner-up and "Miss Photogenic" at a pageant for teens last year in San Bernardino County.

"This last year, being injured, I had a lot of down time," said Price, who won a bronze medal in women's Super X at X Games Los Angeles 2010. "I thought, 'What the hell? I'm bored. I'll just go for it.'"

While injuries have cut back her racing schedule, Price has other irons in the fire. In addition to signing up for the pageants, last year she launched Sara Price Racing Academy. She also puts on the annual Sara Price Invitational race and helps run her parents' paint and body shop in Riverside, Calif.

Back out on the track in 2013, Price said she's planning on racing at X Games Los Angeles and branching out on four wheels to race utility terrain vehicles on the Lucas Oil off-road racing series.

As far as the shortened 2013 WMX season goes, Price says that, for now, she's not planning on racing, citing financial constraints. "They've knocked us down to three rounds," she added. "And I don't think that's OK for women."

At the pageant Friday and Saturday, Price will join 229 state finalists at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium.

The winner will receive a sapphire-and-diamond ring, training for Miss USA pageant, custom clothing and beauty services, and, until it gets passed on in 2014, a diamond tiara.
