How to find the perfect skis for you
10 New Skis
Now is the time of year when new skis hit the shelves of your local ski shop and buyer's guides show up in your mailbox. But how to find the perfect pair of skis for you? Here are 10 new freeski-oriented skis for men and women, with tips on finding the right pair for you from Greg Floyd, owner of Bent Gate Mountaineering in Golden, Colo.
Rossignol Super 7
First, go to a ski shop with a knowledgeable staff. They should be able to help you sort through the brands and types of skis that are available on the market.
Line Sick Day 110
Know what kind of skis you are looking for. Deciding if you want an all-mountain ski, powder ski or park ski is important. Each of these serves a different purpose, and getting the right kind is key.
Women's Atomic Millenium
Are you going backcountry skiing or relying on lift access? This makes it much easier to choose a ski because the conditions you will encounter are vastly different. Knowing where you'll primarily use your skis will help narrow your options.
If you want an all-mountain ski for soft snow, you'll want a ski with camber under the foot and a rockered tip. A rockered tail may suit you as well, depending on your ski style. Check with your local ski technician for help on diagnosing your style -- they should be able to help you out.
Armada Alpha X
Buy skis at the beginning of the season to be the first with the new gear. This is helpful if you know exactly what you want and don't want to worry about not being able to find your skis of choice later in the season.
K2 Shreditor 102
A ski around 100 millimeters underfoot will give you the most versatility for all-mountain skiing. Whether you're in crud, on groomers or blasting through the park, this type of ski will handle anything you throw at it.
Women's 4FRNT Blondie
For the ladies, don't feel limited to just women's skis if you can't find what you're looking for. You can always get a unisex ski in a shorter length.
Faction Candide 4.0
If you want to save money, the best time to buy is in February. Toward the end of the ski season, many retailers are putting their equipment on sale. Waiting has its pros and cons, but this may be the best time of year to get the best deal on some sweet new skis.
Salomon Rocker 2 108
Demo skis before you buy them. Many ski shops will let you demo skis, so you can find out firsthand if that ski is for you. Check out your local ski area, as various companies travel to resorts with a demo tent filled with their new gear for consumers to try.
Women's Nordica La Niña
Don't be afraid to look at gently used skis, too. Most shops sell their demo fleet at the end of the winter for great deals.
