Pedal Driven CyclesPedal Driven Cycles' new Kool Thing BMX frame is now available for pre-order.

In June of 2011, longtime FBM Bicycles head welder Dave "Spooky" Harrison left his position at FBM and moved to Providence, R.I. Harrison took a job in a metal fabrication shop, and made plans to work on his own line of BMX and non-BMX frames under the Pedal Driven Cycles name. To achieve this, Harrison enlisted the use of Kickstarter to raise funds for his project. Beginning in November of 2011, Harrison raised over $8000 in funds to pay rent on a machine shop space and buy tubing.

After getting the project underway, Harrison's initial plans were to build a limited run of BMX frames under the "Kool Thing" name (a throwback to a Sonic Youth song from the early '90s.) Harrison displayed his first pre-production run at Interbike 2012, and for the past several months, he has been hard at work producing the first run of frames.

This week, Pedal Driven Cycles announced pre-order sales of the first 50 Kool Thing BMX frames. Features include a hand stamped "Kool" stainless steel down tube badge, a laser cut top tube gusset with the letters TCB for "Taking care of business," double butted top and down tube, a single butted seat tube, and top tube sizes of 20.75" and 21".

Pedal Driven CyclesPedal Driven's new Shark Fin Technology, seen on the interior of their bottom bracket shell.

The rear end of the Kool Thing frame features 3/4" diameter tubing, a chainstay length of 13.75", 3/16" heat reared dropouts, removable brake mounts and a Mid bottom bracket. Harrison's version of the Mid bottom bracket includes a new development called 'Shark Fin Technology.' The theory behind the Shark Fin is that by leaving an extra ring of thickened tubing on the interior of the bottom bracket, the tube will not distort when it is being welded. "This means is easier bottom bracket installation for you," says Harrison.

The frame is available in either gloss black or raw, and is now for sale on the Pedal Driven Cycles website. Custom frame orders are now also available from Pedal Driven Cycles.
