Andy Buckworth ruptures spleen
X Games 16 Bronze Medalist in BMX Big Air and Nitro Circus Live performer Andy Buckworth ruptured his spleen on Wednesday night in Greenville, N.C. Buckworth reportedly fell on a decade air after his bike got away from him, and announced his status via Facebook.
"Laying in a Greenville hospital with a ruptured spleen. Thank god for good friends," said 21-year-old Buckworth via Facebook at approximately 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday night.
Buckworth's friends, including X Games 16 BMX Park Gold Medalist Daniel Dhers and Trish Bare Grounds, owner of Bare Essentials Sports Medicine Co., added updates to Buckworth's condition as the night progressed.
"Andy Buckworth has ruptured his spleen but not having surgery at the moment -- out of commission for at least 12 weeks. He is doing well as we get him checked into the hospital for the week," said Trish Bare Grounds via Facebook.
Typically, emergency surgery is performed on the patient to control the amount of blood that leaks into the abdominal cavity after a splenic rupture, but doctors are hoping to avoid surgery because Buckworth has bad asthma.
Meanwhile, Buckworth, who rides for Mirraco, Jet Pilot Clothing, Monster Energy, Oakley, SkullCandy, DC, Ogio and Woodward Camp, continued to respond to comments and well wishes via his Facebook page.
"I'm in a lot of pain laying in a hospital bed in Greenville, but I would like to take a second to thank my friends that took the time out of their day to visit me: Ryan Guettler, Daniel Dhers, Trish, Kyle Baldock and Sandi," added Buckworth.
Buckworth will remain in the hospital throughout the night, and because of the severity of the injury, could miss the majority of the summer contest season, including X Games 17, which he is already pre-qualified for. But we cannot say with certainty what the result of this injury will lead to.
For now, please keep Andy in your thoughts and let's hope we can see some more no-handed double frontflip insanity in the coming months.
