Legendary skateboarder Christian Hosoi has signed on with Australia's Penny Skateboards as a brand ambassador and joins them in presenting the world's first signature plastic skateboard.
Penny Skateboards debuted their Hosoi board recently at the Agenda Tradeshow. Penny's popular Nickel shape received a stylish makeover with Hosoi's iconic "Rising Sun" graphic on the underside of the deck and his signature die cut into the clear griptape up top.
Credited with setting off the recent plastic cruiser board frenzy, Penny Skateboards released the first compostable plastic skate deck last year and now they're introducing a signature deck with one of the most dynamic skaters of all time.
For Penny's founder Ben Mackay, a skateboarder himself, the Hosoi signing is a dream come true. "I couldn't be more stoked to sign Christian onto Penny." Mackay continued, "Christian Hosoi's enthusiastic approach to skateboarding was simply infectious and had greatly influenced my own charge into skateboarding while I was growing up."
Having been a fan of Hosoi in his heyday, decades later both men are parents. Mackay said, "Now, we both share a common love in watching our kids skate, and I feel privileged to have him onboard to help me pass skateboarding onto the next generation."
For Hosoi, who is credited with introducing bold shapes like the "Hammerhead" into skateboarding, it all comes down to the ride. He explained, "I wanted to work with Penny because after riding all the plastic boards on the market nothing felt as good under my feet as a Penny."
Hosoi was also gratified to find that Mackay's enthusiasm for skateboarding parallels his own, saying, "As the original, it exudes style and performance, and Ben's aim in starting Penny to get more feet on skateboards really appealed to me and my own life in teaching my own kids to skate. For me, Penny's about what I'm about, so it's an honor to become an ambassador."
The Hosoi Nickel signature model plastic complete by Penny Skateboards will be released April 1st, just in time for spring shredding. For more information visit Penny's website pennyskateboards.com. To keep up with the latest from Hosoi, check him out on Twitter.
