    White House

    By Colin Bane

    Published Tuesday December 11, 2012

News that snowboarder, skateboarder and action-sports mogul Shaun White dropped $3.85 million in August on a three-bedroom, 3,500-square-foot beachfront home in Encinitas, Calif., is making headlines this week, with presale photos from the original listing hitting TMZ.com and other sites. The home in North San Diego County was built in 1999 and was last listed for $4.25 million, according to real-estate website Zillow.com. White's new surf pad has private stair access to the beach; the house and surf break can be seen in the "Shaun White Backyard Surf Sessions" video released by GoPro in November, above.

"You're not really moving, the water is," White says in the video, comparing surfing to the boardsports he's better known for. "I think a lot of times they underestimate that I can actually surf, but I love it. I think it's more of a peace-of-mind thing."

At the time of the purchase, White, a two-time Winter Olympic gold medalist, had just returned from London, where he and iconic former tennis pro John McEnroe served as an unlikely pair of commentators during NBC's coverage of the 2012 Summer Olympic Games. He was also fresh off his fifth-straight ESPY Award for Best Male Action Sports Athlete, in July, flush with cash from a new multiyear sponsorship deal with GoPro and still reeling from Men's Snowboard SuperPipe and Men's Snowboard Slopestyle wins at Winter X Games Tignes 2012 in March and a pipe win at the 30th anniversary Burton U.S. Open, also in March. White took a Men's Snowboard SuperPipe win at Winter X Games Aspen 2012 in January, where he earned the first-ever perfect score in the pipe at Buttermilk and claimed his fifth straight Winter X gold. All in all, it's been a pretty good year for White, with just the one exception.

White's been plenty busy this week, too: He just wrapped hosting the Oakley Shaun White Air & Style Beijing over the weekend, a 6Star Big Air event on the World Snowboard Tour held in Beijing's iconic "Bird's Nest" stadium. His "8 Days of White Christmas" promotion -- a social-media partnership with Target, Stride, Vail Resorts/Northstar, Oakley, GoPro, Shaun White Supply Co., Burton and the Dew Tour -- concludes this week.

White is scheduled to compete at the Dew Tour's Ion Mountain Championships this week at Breckenridge, Colo., Dec. 13-16, and is among the invited athletes for both Men's SuperPipe (six-peat, anyone?) and Men's Slopestyle at Winter X Games Aspen 2013, Jan. 24-27.
