Last June, Terrible One pro Danny Hickerson crashed while riding trails and fractured several vertebrae in his back. The 27-year-old originally from Houston, Texas, was rushed to Houston's Ben Taub Hospital, an elite level 1 trauma hospital, where it was determined that he would not need surgery to stabilize the fractures.

Instead, Hickerson, who also received four staples in his head from the crash, was placed in an upper back brace for 6-8 weeks to restrict movement and begin the healing process. He was told to remain off the bike for six months, and doctors expected him to make a full recovery.

Earlier this week, Hickerson returned for follow-up examinations, and it was again determined that he would not need surgery to repair the damaged vertebrae. However, even with existing health insurance, Hickerson's rehabilitation costs have added up. To aid Hickerson in his mounting medical bills, Empire BMX, Hickerson's shop sponsor, has set up a donation fund on the Empire BMX site, with suggested donations ranging from $5 to $1000.

With any luck, Hickerson should be able to get back on the bike by the end of the year.

Hickerson's signature Terrible One frame has also been updated for 2012 and is currently available in three different top tube sizes from Empire BMX.
