Powderwhore Productions has been making backcountry ski films for the past eight years. Based out of Salt Lake City, Utah, they've usually had their choice of deep powder conditions in Utah's Wasatch Range and around the Western U.S. and Canada.
But last winter, low snow totals and unstable avalanche conditions made it difficult for filmmakers Noah and Jonah Howell to get the kind of footage they're used to. They were forced to get creative and make do with what they had, which included taking trips to the Antarctic Peninsula, Norway, France, Chile, Alaska, BC, and of course, in their backyard in Utah.
The name of their 2012 film, for which the trailer dropped on Tuesday, is "Choose Your Adventure." "Who didn't love those books as a kid?" says Powderwhore co-owner Noah Howell. "This year's movie is such a mixed bag of characters, exotic locations and action that we wanted to get that point across in the title. You really never know what's coming next in this film. We're exploring an abandoned mining town in the Arctic, dropping cliffs with Hugo Harrisson in British Columbia, plunging into the Antarctic Ocean in Speedos, blasting through deep power, catching up with some crusty locals in the Wasatch and more."
The film includes athletes such as Chris Davenport, Matt Reardon, Drew Stoecklein, Forrest Coots, Ian Provo, Neil Provo, Chuck Mumford, Jake Sakson, Andrew McLean, Seth Wescott and more.
"Over the last few years I have had the opportunity to ski on the Antarctic Peninsula three times and it has quickly become one of my favorite places in the world for ski mountaineering," says Chris Davenport, who filmed with the Powderwhores in Antarctica. "I love life on the boat, and the easy access to incredible ski terrain make it hard to beat. For filming, there is just so much that catches your eye that it's a really productive place. And throw in the amazing wildlife and gorgeous ocean views and you have a location second-to-none for the new film 'Choose Your Adventure.'"
The film will premiere on Sept. 26 in Salt Lake City.
