It's the Dew Tour dirt finals. Longtime Fly Bikes pro Kevin Porter drops into the roll-in, does a perfect hand-flip crankspin over the first set, a truckdriver over the second and an x-up tailwhip over the third set. Porter lands, jams his foot in the tire to slow down and returns to the staging area to await his score.
As Porter sits on camera awaiting his score, he grabs a to-go cup of coffee and drinks from it, in the same way that other pros grab energy drink squirt bottles. It once read Intelligentsia. But it now reads "Bow Truss Coffee Roasters."
Yes, Kevin Porter, the first rider to be sponsored legitimately sponsored by a coffee company, is now the first BMX rider to have legitimately "bean" sponsored by two coffee companies. And amid all these firsts, he has a new coffee brand to promote -- Bow Truss, a collective of veteran coffee professionals with a roasting house based in the Lakeview area of Chicago.
According to Bow Truss, "Motivated by his positive experience with the Chicago-based independent roaster, Kevin is excited to bring his innovative perspective and knowledge of coffee to this new venture with the city's newest independent coffee roaster, Bow Truss."
Porter's views reflected their excitement. "I'm excited to be working with Bow Truss as they grow in these early stages. I look forward to some incredible brand collaborations and discovering some great single origins. My goal is to represent the brand and really help it expand to other independent communities outside of just coffee."
Porter, formerly living in Long Beach, Calif., returned to the Chicago area last week to work on the new partnership, and will promote Bow Truss throughout future travels both local and international. Porter's current sponsors include Fly Bikes, Empire BMX and Quintin.
