The Nitro Circus public relations team is moving at full throttle this week. Just two days before the release of "Nitro Circus The Movie 3D," today MTV2 announced it is renewing the television version of the stunt spectacle tour "Nitro Circus Live" for a second season. "Nitro Circus Live" is a companion to the stunt show on MTV called "Nitro Circus." Travis Pastrana and his crew are hosting a special "Nitro Circus Live" season one marathon on Monday to mark the extension on the network.
During its first season on MTV2, "Nitro Circus Live" established a strong following among males ages 12 to 34 -- the channel's core demographic -- the network said in a press release. Paul Ricci, MTV2's senior vice president of Programming, told ESPN.com the initial season of "Nitro Circus Live" exceeded expectations.
"Travis and the Nitro Circus crew have been fan favorites for many years on MTV2, so it was a no-brainer to bring 'Nitro Circus Live' back," Ricci said. The second season will premiere in early 2013, and MTV says production will begin in fall of this year.
"Nitro Circus Live" show came on the heels of the brand's three film installments, as well as others such as "Lock n' Load" and "Thrillbillies," and the original MTV series that first aired in February 2009. And the oncoming new season will no doubt spawn an evolution of the riders' supply of stunts.
The quest for fresh footage is complicated by the movie release and the 11 shows the troupe performed during its live tour through Australia earlier this year.
"All the stunts have never been seen before and shot in 3D so viewers will feel like they're right there during the stunts," BMX rider, BASE jumper, skier, and general contraption whiz Erik Roner told ESPN in May.
Although the feature-length 3D film releases across the country on Wednesday, select cities are holding world premiere screenings on Tuesday evening, including Los Angeles, Las Vegas, New York and Philadelphia.
On Nov. 18, the crew will embark on its European tour beginning in Stockholm, Sweden, concluding in Birmingham in central England on December 5. Portions of the 11-stop European trip will be featured in season two of Nitro Circus Live.
