This year's X Games Step Up competition saw the riders jumping to heights that no one imagined. Riding up a tall 15-plus-foot almost vertical take-off lip only to propel yourself yet another 30-plus feet into the air was going to require your body to be in top shape.
With the majority of the athletes competing using first gear to take off, it was going to mean that when coming down on their landing their suspension was going to be tight or having a packed feeling. This means your body will be absorbing all the impact, so you better have been hitting the gym.
This year's Step Up was no joke, which is why we decided to create a four-part series of videos detailing specific exercises for each discipline in FMX. If you want to train like these athletes or you are an up-and-coming FMX rider, check back later this week for the next workout tip. Today's workout tip with Matt Buyten [see video above] is for Step Up, and explained by trainer Charles Dao of Icon1 Sports.
