Jordy Smith hosted a nighttime surf event called Red Bull Nightshift in his home country of South Africa last week. The event, which took place on Durban, South Africa's North Beach on June 30, drew over 9,000 spectators to watch top surfers under the lights.
Other invited surfers included Travis Logie, David Weare, Ricky Basnett, Dan Redman, Rudy Palmboomm, Chad Du Toit, Shaun Joubert, Michael February and Slade Prestwich.
"The event was a great success," said Smith. "The guys are an amazing bunch of surfers and gave the crowd something to enjoy despite the conditions deteriorating toward the end of the night. It's great to be home and to see such a huge crowd come out and support us."

This is the second night surfing event Red Bull has hosted -- last year's inaugural Red Bull Nightshift was held in Cape Town in January 2011.
Freeride jet-skier Jeremy Phillips opened the night.
"Great beach entertainment combined with Durban's amazing winter climate has proved to be a winning formula," said surf personality Gigs Celliers. "Events like Red Bull Nightshift go a long way in reviving Durban's reputation as 'Surf City'. In fact we haven't seen crowds like this at a surfing event in almost a decade."
The ASP Prime Mr Price Pro Ballito is taking place July 2 - 8 in South Africa.
