The 2012 ESPYS will be televised live Wednesday, July 11, at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN from the Nokia Theatre at L.A. LIVE in Los Angeles, Calif.

The nominees for the 20th annual ESPY Awards were recently announced, including categories for Best Male Action Sports Athlete and Best Female Action Sports Athlete. Shaun White, Kelly Slater, Travis Rice and Ryan Villopoto are nominated for the men's action sports category, and Kelly Clark, Kaya Turski, Jamie Anderson, and Carissa Moore will be vying for the women's title.

Shaun White has won ESPY's fan-voted award six times since 2003, including every year since 2008. White seems poised for a five-peat this year after scoring a five-peat and a perfect score in Winter X Games Snowboard SuperPipe in Aspen last January. But White is up against some serious competition.

Snowboarder Travis Rice, whose film "The Art of Flight" was the biggest action sports video of the year, was named among the finalists for National Geographic's Adventurers of the Year 2012 and he won the Red Bull Supernatural competition he created at Baldface Lodge in British Columbia.

Surfer Kelly Slater won his 11th ASP World Tour title in 2011 -- a lot of fans thought he was robbed in last year's ESPY Awards after winning his 10th World Title -- and now claims the distinction of being both the oldest surfer to win the title (at age 39) and the youngest (he was 20 when he won his first one, 19 years prior).

And motocross sensation Ryan Villopoto claimed both the AMA World Supercross and AMA Motocross titles in 2011, won the Monster Energy Cup, and led Team USA to victory at the Motocross of Nations. He successfully defended his Supercross title in 2012 before injuries prevented him from doing the same in the AMA Motocross Championship.

Visit the ESPYS 20th anniversary site to vote for Best Male Action Sports Athlete of the Year 2012.

On the women's side, skier Kaya Turski three-peated in Women's Ski Slopestyle at both Winter X Games Aspen (where she landed the first 1080 in women's competition) and Winter X Games Tignes in 2012 -- the word "unbeatable" tends to get thrown around whenever her name is mentioned -- and swept the 2011-2012 Winter Dew Tour.

Snowboarder Kelly Clark -- who won her first ESPY for Best Action Sports Athlete of the Year back in 2002, before the ESPYs created separate categories for men and women -- owned women's halfpipe competition again this year, defending her Winter X Games SuperPipe gold in both Aspen and Tignes, and claiming the overall titles on the Winter Dew Tour, Burton Global Open Series, and TTR World Tour.

Jamie Anderson similarly dominated women's snowboard slopestyle events this year, claiming gold at both Winter X Games Aspen and Winter X Games Tignes, then going on to win the championship titles (again) on both the Burton Global Open Series and the TTR World Snowboard Tour.

Surfer Carissa Moore, then 18, became the youngest woman ever to win the ASP World Tour championship title, winning three of the seven events on the 2011 tour. In December, she was among the nominees for 2012 Laureus World Action Sportsperson of the Year, an award that ultimately went to Kelly Slater.

Voting for Best Female Action Sports Athlete of the Year 2012 and other ESPY categories went live Tuesday morning.
