On Tuesday, the Canadian Olympic Committee announced that the late Sarah Burke would be inducted into the 2012 Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame.

Burke never got a chance to compete in the Winter Olympics, but the 29-year-old freeskier -- who died in a training accident this January -- played an important role in advocating for ski halfpipe's inclusion in the Olympic program. In 2011, ski halfpipe and ski and snowboard slopestyle officially became Olympic sports for the 2014 Sochi, Russia, Olympic Games.

Burke, a six-time Winter X Games champion, will be added to the Hall of Fame as a builder.

"Sarah was one of those extraordinary women who believed that anything was possible," said Burke's mother Jan Phelan. "I think that her belief not only helped her succeed, but inspired others to be the best that they could be. I know that Sarah would be happy that all she worked for and sought to achieve is being honoured with her induction into the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame.

Wrestler Daniel Igali, Nordic skier Beckie Scott, freestyle skier Jean-Luc Brassard, the 2010 Olympic men's hockey team, the 2006 women's hockey team, and synchronized swim coach Julie Sauve are also being inducted into the 2012 Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame, which currently has 411 members and is located at Calgary's Canada Olympic Park.

The 2012 Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame Gala Dinner and Induction Ceremony will take place Sept. 21 at Toronto's Air Canada Centre.
