    Hamilton appears on Biggest Loser

    By ESPN Action Sports

    Published Thursday March 22, 2012

Pro surfer Bethany Hamilton appeared on the reality show The Biggest Loser this week.

The episode, which aired Tuesday night on NBC, took place in Hawaii, where contestants are competing to see who can lose the most weight.

Hamilton, who lost her arm in 2003 from a shark attack and inspired the film, "Soul Surfer," was brought on a special guest to teach the crew how to surf and talk about the idea of having no excuses for being active.

Hamilton, 22, was born and raised in Hawaii. "I started competitive surfing and then when I was 13, I lost my arm to a shark," Hamilton told the contestants on the show. "I wasn't sure at first what I was going to do. But I decided I wanted to try surfing again, and I was determined to do it with one arm. In less than a month, I was back out there surfing. And today I'm a professional surfer."
