You see it a lot these days, "surfing as sport." Not art, not recreation, not fringe pursuit or act of counterculture rebellion, but an actual athletic pursuit. There's no question that surfing requires a high degree of both physical endurance and dexterity, but let's be frank, there's a big difference between a beach bum and a gym rat. Nevertheless, as pro surfers' paychecks rise and the pressure to post results is intensified, worlds are colliding. Few places is this more evident than Dean Sports Consulting's (DSC) facility in San Clemente's "surf ghetto." We took a tour of the place recently and came to find out that surfing and sports science have a lot more going on that previously thought.
