A river bore runs through it

Surfing the epic Qiantang River Bore in China.

China's Qiantang River Tidal Bore, more dramatically known as the "Silver Dragon," is quickly proving to be a legit surf destination. Originally pioneered by Greg and Rusty Long and Mark Healey back in September of 2008, up until that point the Chinese government had kept the freshwater super wave off limits. And for good reason, it's considered the world's largest tidal bore, can travel an upwards of 25 mph, and waves can top out at 15 feet. Needless to say, up until surfers showed up the Silver Dragon was nothing more than a navigational nightmare. I was fortunate enough to be invited on the most recent expedition there, where I was able to document shred head Curren Caples, "Endless Summer II" star Robert "Wingnut" Weaver, Mary Obsorne and several others riding some really amazing waves.
