Airbags: love them or hate them -- it definitely doesn't look like they're going away anytime soon. It's an interesting phenomenon cropping up in snowboarding and freeskiing. On the one hand you have snowboarders like Mikkel Bang who stand firmly on the side of airbags being bad for the sport. The theory being that snowboarders should be learning their tricks on snow. Once you introduce airbags into the mix you've taken snowboarding a step away from riding and one step closer to gymnastics.
On the other side you have kids like Sage Kotsenburg, who told us in an interview at the beginning of the season -- done at the top of a private jump-to-airbag that his sponsors set up to help him get ready for Dew Tour and Winter X -- that: "Everyone's been on airbags, so if you haven't been on one, you probably don't have a couple tricks other people have. It's key to have one. It's getting out of hand."
They people who run the snowboard camps up at Mt. Hood definitely seem to be down for the bags. Here's an edit from the glacier showing us why. Welcome to the future.
