Today is the day. X Games 17 has begun. I'm out here on the ground in Los Angeles and things are heating up. If yesterday's practice sessions were any indication of just how real it's going to get this weekend ... then things are gonna get really real. Last night Paul Rodriguez, Shane O'Neill, Chaz Ortiz, Justin Figueroa, Ryan Sheckler and more were putting in work on the street course in practice. I'd venture the street course is maybe the best yet, at X Games and that opinion comes from having skated it myself and having watched guys like Ryan Decenzo start blasting on it as soon as they rolled up to the venue.
Over in the park section, the new breed of transition killers were finding lines in unlikely places. New pro Aaron "Jaws" Homoki was out there ruling along with Zero's Ben Hatchell and recent Chocolate skateboards recruit Raven Tershay. These young bucks were mixing it up with veterans of the concrete pits including Omar Hassan and Bucky Lasek.
This year the Big Air ramp is out doors and sits right across from the Staples Center on Figueroa street. Yesterday I met new 900 club member and big air sensation Mitchie Brusco. The kid isn't tall enough to ride certain rides at amusement parks and yet, he's nailing nines on one of the scariest obstacles a skateboarder has ever rolled on.
It's going to be a big weekend here in Los Angeles and we'll be bringing you up to the minute video, recaps, photography and analysis. Keep checking the home page of ESPN.com/action for everything you need. Skateboarding competition kicks off this afternoon at 2:30 PST for Skateboard Park eliminations. Should be one to watch.
