Considering he's only 16 years old, it's hard to reckon that we'd already be looking for the next Kolohe Andino, but that's the kind of surf world we're living in. Anyway, Maui's Ian Gentil might just be that kid. Born to Brazilian parents, 14-year-old Gentil's spent the entirety of his life on the northern shore of Maui, or at least until recently. The prodigious regular-footer's logged more time on the road than almost any other kid his age. Australia, Brazil, Indo, Nicaragua, he's crossed them all off of his list -- and that was just this year. And when it comes to competitive success, he's already a multiple NSSA National Champ, and last year became one of only three surfers in NSSA Nationals history to ever post a perfect heat score (two 10-point rides). But as with most travelers, home is where the heart is, and on any given day Gentil can be found reveling in the peaks of Pavilles or roaming the wide-open expanse that is Hookipa. When not on the road or in the water he can be found doing exactly the same thing most other kids his age are doing: mucking around on a skateboard or locked in behind the TV playing video games. But given the talent boom on the Valley Isle, don't expect him to be sitting around on the couch with his Nintendo for too long.
