The Billabong Pipeline Masters was on hold again for Friday. Pipe has not been seeing the best of this north swell. However, the rest of the North Shore has been pretty bonkers lately, with some lower profile spots getting just plain epic.
Kelly Slater was seen out mixing it up at Lanikea in very solid surf, riding a 5'9 on Wednesday.
Friday, the event was called off again and the weather wasn't too "Hawaiian." Temps dropped to a frigid 60 degrees and folks are running around in scarves and beanies. But there was plenty of heat focused on the North Shore the past few days.
Chris Ward, was crushing it Thursday night, calling it the best Lani's he's ever seen (that's about when his leash snapped on a clean up set.) The wind went hard offshore in the evening, and most agreed it was pretty memorable, stopping traffic back to Haliewa. Australia's Tracks Magazine Editor, Luke Kennedy, got speared in the throat by his board at Sunset and is in critical condition. We send our best wishes to the downed journo.
While the Pipe Masters likely won't resume this weekend, the Memorial for Andy Irons is on schedule for 10 a.m. Saturday. You can watch it via the webcast here. The official forecast has a smaller swell hitting next week with a little more west in it, which could mean go time at Pipe.
