Taj Mihelich, legendary park and street rider with a laundry list of contributions to BMX that includes a hand in starting Terrible One, three signature shoes from etnies, multiple video parts and an unforgettable approach to griz airs, has officially launched a new bike brand through his component sponsor Odyssey. Dubbed Fairdale Bicycles, the brand is concentrating on non-BMX specific bicycles, including single-speed road bikes, 700cc cruisers, 29-inch cruisers and more.
"Fairdale is the brand for all my friends who ask me what kind of bike they should get just for riding around town," says Mihelich. "In the past, I always struggled to find a good answer for them. So many bikes are too focused on racing, extremeness, trends, are dorky looking or just bogged down with too much flakey technology. On the other hand, BMX, with its simple functionality, has taught me that the technology of a bike rarely increases the fun of riding it."
The first samples to arrive (pictured above) include different sizes in Fairdale's single-speed road bike. According to Taj, Fairdale intends to expand, including accessories (pannier racks for skateboards) and "whatever else we feel like doing."
Following back surgery in July of 2009, and after parting ways with sponsor Giant Bicycles, Mihelich joined forces with Odyssey's OTX Design office and began the Fairdale blog earlier this year. Because Taj really hasn't been able to ride BMX at full capacity since his back surgery, Fairdale became a new outlet for Taj's seasoned design skills. "Fairdale is my opportunity to design bikes based on my 30+ years of experience and my love for simple and reliable bikes. As a bonus, I also get to work with the Odyssey design and engineering team, whose capabilities have been proven for a long time now," he adds.
Fairdale Bicycles will be in display in Interbike later this month.
