You know summer has arrived when the contests for kids start sprouting out of the sand like dune grass. We've already seen the Rip Curl GromSearch prime the pump. The Quiksilver King of the Groms took over Typhoon Lagoon a couple weeks back, and then this past weekend young Josh Moniz came out on top at the King of the Groms stop in Huntington Beach -- where he walked away with a cool $400 and trip to France.
And that's just the start of it. This week you can bombard yourself with a live webcast of the Surfing America USA Championships, which runs down at Lowers from June 23-28. (Although, to be fair, there are a couple of adult and longboard divisions.) Then, before you can come up for air, the gremlins roll right into NSSA Nationals up in Huntington, which will also feature a live webcast from July 1-3.
So yeah, looks like school's out for summer, the kids will be at the beach, the little leauge parents will be in tow, and an old guy like me has to find somewhere to retreat to. There are finally some signs of swell out there in the South Pacific, but as one friend puts it, "It comes just in time for the lineups to fill up with overpaid teenage punks." Of course, that's only one way of looking at it.
