Yesterday marked the longest day of the year, the first official day of summer and Go Skateboarding Day worldwide. For several hundred skaters here in New York the day got started at the Lower East Side skatepark where Fiveboro, Kr3w and CCS held a joint event that brought together so many skaters it pretty much made the park unskatable. A brave few hit the picnic table set atop the park's pyramid for a best-trick type contest where some solid skaters, including Birdhouse's Clint Walker were mixing it up with some slightly less skilled skaters willing to fling their carcasses across the obstacle in all manner of attempts for a shot at glory, attention and maybe even some cash coming out of the pockets of Fiveboro's own Steve Rodriguez. When CCS's Mark Nardelli started throwing Kr3w T-shirts, the product toss craze went off. After that there was nothing left to do than to skate en-mass through the streets of Chinatown and over the Williamsburg Bridge into Brooklyn for more revelry at KCDC skateshop. Jahmal Williams was holding down the miniramp inside the shop while kids lurked, played games of SKATE and tried the skating equivalent of a track meet long jump out front. The impromptu long ollie contest got going with kids trying to clear upwards of 19 boards. The day tapered off from there as hordes of skaters splintered into groups and could be spotted sessioning spots all around the borough well into the night. Not a bad way to get the summer started.
