Education doesn't exactly command a position of high priority in freestyle skiing. Many of the young contenders circumvent learning by attending ski academies. And the most dynastic veterans of today either finished high school without attending or simply dropped out. So you can see how it might be easy for a young freestyle skier to consider school more of a hindrance than anything else. It's a lot like the documentary Hoop Dreams, except with affluent, supportive, well educated parents. But no matter how long the odds become, there's always an indomitable spirit out there who can overcome them.
Gus Kenworthy has made a name for himself in skiing, landing a few major podium finishes, despite his youth, and competing in the 2010 Jon Olsson Super Sessions as a member of the inaugural, fan-voted, Team Newschoolers, which took second in the event. But while Gus hasn't been traveling the world to ply his two-planked trade, he has been using his summers and falls to hit the books.
Today, all that hard work pays off when Gus graduates on time with the Telluride High School Class of 2010, and giving a speech, no less. Kenworthy will address his fellow students, faculty, friends, and family today at a commencement ceremony slated for 4:00 p.m. MDT.
"I'm sure it'll be pretty boring and long, but because our graduating classes are so small," Kenworthy attempted to downplay the honor in an announcement sent today via email, "everyone is allowed to give a speech."
Everybody? Well, everybody including Gus, at least. Fans of Kenworthy can get a taste of his skills as an orator by watching the commencement ceremony live on TellurideWebTV.com today at 4:00 p.m. MDT.
