With all the big paychecks, little age groups, and constant partying involved in freestyle skiing, it's easy to get submerged in the rising tide. So when Level 1 asked me to shoot with their 10-skier crew in Alpine Meadows this spring, I figured it was going to get caught up in yet another party. But every once in a while a subtle moment bubbles up to give you a breath of fresh air.
On this particular jump, I had all the stock angles covered. Instead of leaving at the height of the party, slightly buzzed with the cutest girl under my arm. I stayed until the very end, with the keg empty and only a handful of people still sessioning.
Crawling on my belly in the snow like a soldier storming the shores of Omaha beach, a small snowball attacked me. Then it struck me. And there it was, the photo of the day.
Sometimes the most interesting things are often seen in the hazy dawn, rather than in the hazy frenzy of the club.
