Last weekend the future of Maui surfing was on display at Ho'okipa Beach Park for Ian Walsh's Menehune Mayhem. Imaikalani De Vault was the standout competitor for the seventh anniversary of this event. The 11-year-old Kamehameha student won the 12-13 Boys division, practically blowing the tail out every turn and punting all over the windy, two-to four-foot waves at the Pavillion's peak.
"I was blown away by Imaikalani Devault. That kid is leagues ahead of where my generation was at 16, and he's 12 years old," said prolific pro surfer Ian Walsh who puts on the Menehune Mayhme to stoke-out the community. Walsh has watched De Vault grow from a tadpole to a super grom, sharing Ho'okipa as a homebreak.
"Right now, Imaikalani Devault is by far is ahead of his time," praised Kai "Borg" Garcia who flew down from the North Shore of O'ahu to support this event. Groms had a chance to arm wrestle Garcia for prizes at Ian Walsh's Menehune Mayhem. Although, the kids were chugging copious amounts of Red Bull, no grom could beat Borg.
"It gives back to the community," says Garcia of the Ian Walsh's Menehune Mayhem. "A lot of people don't' give back and to see guys like Ian and the Irons brothers make it, be successful and then give back to the kids just inspires the kids to do better and achieve like they did."
In addition to arm wrestling Borg, the groms also had a scavenger hunt and were given prizes for their report cards. Seldom know fact about Ian Walsh: the big-wave charger was valedictorian of his high school class at King Kekaulike. Tosh Pela, Makama Johnson, Ariel Martin and Tasha Vamark were awarded for their GPAs.
See. You don't need to rip at a Ian Walsh's Menehune Mayhem to win a prize. All of the grommets in attendance at Ho'okipa that day went home with some kind of free merch. See complete list of results below to stoke out groms like Ian. Surf kids and their parents love to see their name published.
