Hibbert ties Morgan for most snocross wins

AMSOIL Championship Snocross

Tucker Hibbert rides to victory on Friday at the AMSOIL Championship Snocross event in Bessemer, Mich. Hibbert swept the weekend's races to tie Blair Morgan's record of 84 career pro snocross wins.

Near-zero temperatures in Bessemer, Mich., couldn't prevent red-hot Tucker Hibbert from tying Blair Morgan's career pro snocross wins record with his second-consecutive AMSOIL Championship Snocross weekend sweep.

Hibbert tied Morgan's 84-win record after a decisive victory in the second Pro Open race of the weekend at Blackjack Ski Resort on Michigan's Upper Peninsula on Saturday. Hibbert has won all four Championship Snocross Pro Open races this season.

"My goal is to win every race I enter whether or not I’m chasing records. For me, it’s all about doing the best I can. It’s an exciting honor to be tied with Blair for wins but just like when we used to battle back in the day, I want to beat him," said Hibbert in a statement.

Morgan began his record-setting snocross career in 1997, using an aggressive stand-up style and dominated the sport for much of the next several years. He stepped away from snowmobiles occasionally to pursue a career in motocross, and many believe his 84-win total could have been higher had he stayed in the snow. Weeks before he was slated to make a return to snowmobiles, Morgan had his spinal cord severed in a motocross practice accident in 2008 in Montreal, ending his competitive career.

On Friday, Hibbert qualified in first position but had to overcome a false start penalty, sending him to the back of the field on the restart. He passed seven riders on the first lap, and by the third lap he had darted into third place. Last year's Pro Lite season champion Jake Scott led the race through three laps, but made a costly mistake on a wide turn on the fourth lap, and Hibbert jumped two spots and never looked back.

Saturday's race was comparatively easier as Hibbert qualified third, but led almost the entire race.

“We got a good start and got into some lappers pretty quick, and it got a bit scary (due to the poor visibility issues),” said Hibbert. “But the track was better tonight, not as much ice underneath.”
